Classification of Adavu

`Classification of Adavu

Generally Adavu are classified into 13 groups having sub divisions with variations are different permutations. The important rule to be observed is that all the Adavu are to be performed by right foot first followed by the left in all three degrees of speed. They must be performed in such a position that the outward bent of the thigh and the knee is very important i.e., the Aramandali or Ardhamandala  posture. The postures to be used in Bharatanatya consists of 3 varieties namely Sama, Aramandi and Muzhumandi.

Sama  Sthana:

This is a standing position and is the natural position of the body. Here the body is held erect, spine kept straight, both feet touching together with  toes facing front. Weight is disturbed evenly on both feet. This is also known as Samabhanga and Saushtava.

Ardhamandi Sthana:

Also known as Aramandi or Aramandala. Here the feet will be turned to the sides (PARSVA) to form a horizontal line. Weight should be balanced on both feet evenly.

Mandi Sthana:

Also known as Muzhumandi where the dancer will be in a sitting posture. The thighs as well as the shanks will be in contact. Knees will be turned out. Body will be resting on toes. Weight will be on the feet and toes. It requires perfect balance to sit on this posture. Care should be taken not to lose balance and fall down.

In addition there are more Sthaanas namely Alida and Pratyalida.

In Alida the left leg will be in Aramandi and right leg stretched out.

In Pratyalida, the right leg in Aramandi and left leg stretched out to the side.
