                                                  Asamyuta Hastas (single hand gestures)

1.  Pataka

to denote the self, beginning of a natya, to say no, the horse, taking an oath, cutting, silence, entering a street, to sleep, forcing open doors, to denotr greatness and goodness, to bless, addressing a person, a shield, a rainy day and the time.

2. Tripataka

To denote a crown, a tree, a lamp, a fire, an arrow, and a bird.

3. Ardhapataka

To denote numbers two or say both, a slab or a board, a knife or a spear, a tower, and the bank of a river.

4. Kartarimukha

To denote separation, a creeper, a difference, a corner of an eye, lighting, a falling, weeping and dying.

5. Mayura

To denote peacock’s neck, a creeper, vomiting, scattering, to remove knots from the hair, to praise and apply tilakam.

6. Ardhachandra

To denote half-moon, a hand seizing the throat, a knife or a spear, consecrating an idol, meditation, prayers, origin and to greet.

7. Arala

To denote drinking and violent storm.

8. Sukatunda

To denote shooting of an arrow, angry mood and a spear or an axe.

9. Musti

To denote steadfastness to grasp and hold various things, might and valour.

10. Sikhara

To denote Shivalinga (the phallic symbol), a bow, a pillar, to question, the act of embrace and sounding a bell.

11. Kapittha

To denote goddess Lakshmi, Saraswathi, the act of milking cows, offering incense and camphor, gathering the ends of robes, to pull and to hold, things.

12. Katakamukha

To denote picking flowers, holding a necklace or garland of flowers, offering betel leaves, speaking glancing, and applying perfumes.

13. Suchi

to denote number 1, to point, to think, to threaten, astonishment, the decline of the day, the world, beating drums, a rod, the potter’s wheel, and the circumference of a wheel.

14. Chandrakala

To denote the moon, the face, the crown of shiva, a cudgel.

15. Padmakosa

To denote a lotus bud, fruits, a cooking pot, an anthill, an egg, a ball, to suggest a circular movement, and round breasts of a woman.

16. Sarpasirsa

To denote a snake, sprinkling water, the movement of elephant’s ears, arms of wrestlers.

17. Mrgasirsa

To denote women, fear, to call, quarrel, the limit, massage of the feet, height, and taking steps.

18. Simhamukha

To denote a lion’s an elephant, homa or yagna and preparations of medicine by physicians.

19. Kangula

To denote fruits, a bird, a coconut, bells worn by children, and betal nut tree.

20. Alapadma

To denote a fully bloomed lotus, beauty, to praise, a hair knot, the full moon, a apiece, a hill or a mountain and a mirror.

21. Hamsasya

To denote beak of a bird, purity, pearls, jasmine flowers, the act of writing or painting, and tying a knot.

22. Hamsapaksa

To denote number6, a bridge and a covering

23. Sandamsa

To denote number5, the belly or naval, great fear, to worship, and making offering to deities.

24. Mukula

To denote a water-lilly, eating, and a flower bud.

25.Tamrachuda

To denote a cock, a crane, a crow, a camel, a pen.

26.Trisula

To denote a trident and the idea of trinity.
